The
Minister for Communities and Sport, Stewart Maxwell MSP
recently officially marked the site start for Barrhead Housing
Association’s 65 new build development project within
Auchenback. This has just gone on-site with Cruden Building
and Renewals and will cost £9million to complete over
an 18 month period. The development includes 7 sites, 4
of which have been transferred to the Association by East
Renfrewshire Council at nil value to contribute to the delivery
of the Council’s strategic housing investment plan
for the area. The sites take place across Divernia Way,
Fenwick Drive, Newton Avenue and Braeside Crescent.
Designed by Glasgow Architects, Anderson
Bell + Christie, they will include a range of house types
and sizes. Some of the sites are difficult to develop with
sloping gradients and some of the terraced housing will
be split level. The development will include 2 and 3 bedroomed
terraced houses, 1 and 2 bedroomed cottage flats and single
storey mews cottages for the elderly. All 65 properties
will be for rent, and designed to meet housing for varying
need standards. The development will include the re-location
and upgrade of a play facility within Newton Avenue and
up-grade to some of the footpaths. The development goes
on-site following full consultation and support of the Auchenback
community and personally represents an achievement for the
Association’s Secretary Brian Connelly MBE, also a
local resident, who has worked tirelessly within the community
for many years. He was rewarded his MBE through his work
on tenant participation, being also a Board member of Tenant
Participation Advisory Service, the chairperson of Auchenback
Resource Centre, a well-used local community facility and
chairperson of the Auchenback Tenants and Residents Association.
Communities and Sport Minister Stewart Maxwell
said: “This development will provide 65 new homes
for affordable rent to people in need across the area and
the Scottish Government is pleased to be part of this process
by committing £5.8 million of funding. “We are
investing more than £1.5 billion in housing over the
next three years. This is 19 per cent more than planned
by the previous administration for the last spending review
period and is expected to provide 21,500 affordable homes.
“One of our highest priorities is taking action on
housing. That is why the First Minister recently announced
the publication of the next steps for our housing policy,
and why up to 100 million capital spending will be brought
forward over the next two years to support these efforts
and help us to meet the demand for affordable housing in
Scotland. These actions will help people across the country
to find new housing of the right kind in the right places.”
